Sustainable development is the process of combining economic, social and environmental development by meeting the needs of the present generation while at the same time taking into account the needs of future generations. This approach has a history dating back to the mid-20th century, emphasizing the interdependence of economic, social and environmental dimensions. The publication of the Brundtland Report in 1987 further spread the concept of sustainable development.
In September 2015, the United Nations set the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as a product of the steps taken to ensure sustainable development on a global scale. The SDGs aim to address the various challenges faced around the world, improve the well-being of societies and protect our planet. The SDGs, which entered into force on 1 January 2016, offer a comprehensive and sustained approach by promoting a harmonious balance between economic growth, social equity and environmental stewardship.
