Earth Overshoot Day marks the date when humanity has used up the natural resource budget that should sustain us throughout the entire year. In 2026, this date was determined as 30 July.

🌱 Humanity is currently using nature 73% faster than the Earth’s ecosystems can regenerate. This level of consumption means that we are living as if we had 1.73 Earths and represents the highest global ecological overshoot ever recorded in human history.

📌 Since global ecological overshoot began in the early 1970s, the accumulated ecological debt has reached a level equivalent to approximately 20.6 years of the Earth’s biological productivity. If the current level of overshoot continues, this debt is expected to grow by approximately 0.73 Earth-years each year.

⚫ Carbon emissions resulting from the burning of fossil fuels account for 61% of humanity’s total Ecological Footprint. Reducing carbon dioxide emissions from fossil fuels by 50% could move Earth Overshoot Day approximately three months later in the year.

🇹🇷 In the case of Türkiye, if everyone in the world consumed resources at the same rate as people living in Türkiye, the planet’s annual renewable natural resource budget would have been exhausted by 6 June. Approximately 2.3 Earths would be needed to sustain this level of consumption.

Earth Overshoot Day reminds us once again that it is not possible to use resources as if they were unlimited and that we need to align our production, consumption, energy use, and lifestyles with the limits of the planet.

🌍 Protecting our planet’s limited resources and moving Earth Overshoot Day to a later date in the year is a shared responsibility for all of us. Every step we take today toward a more sustainable future contributes to protecting the natural resources of tomorrow.
