Earlier Every Year…
The Earth Overshoot Day, which marks the date when humanity’s demand for ecological resources exceeds what the planet can regenerate in a year, once again presents a sobering picture.
In 2024, humanity consumed resources equivalent to 1.7 Earths, while in 2025, this number has risen to 1.8 Earths -meaning we are depleting nature’s capacity faster each year.
As in previous years, this critical date was announced on June 5 — World Environment Day. This is no coincidence, but a warning: our planet’s resources are not limitless.
Global Earth Overshoot Day 2025: July 24, 2025
A clear reminder that living in harmony with nature is no longer a choice — it’s a necessity.
For Türkiye, June 18 marks the day when the nation exhausts its annual ecological capacity for 2025. From that date onward, we live by “borrowing” from the future.
At the Sustainable Development Application and Research Center, we see this date not just as an indicator, but as undeniable evidence that:
Economic systems, consumption habits, and policies must be re-evaluated.
What needs to be done?
• Reduce dependence on fossil fuels
• Protect ecological balance in agriculture and production
• Minimize food waste
• Promote circular economy and sustainable living practices
• Encourage education, awareness, and social transformation
These figures are not only the responsibility of environmental scientists or policymakers — they concern us all.
A more livable future can only be build together, starting today.
